01 / Why we have one
So we can stand behind the code.
AxonOps is the steward of the Chroniton Labs projects. With the copyright in one place, AxonOps can stand behind the code, and offer fixes and features back to the Apache® projects ours are built on, without tracking down every contributor again.
Nothing here is new. The agreement is based on the Project Harmony templates, in their assignment form. Assigning copyright with a binding promise to keep the code open is long established: the Free Software Foundation has asked contributors to GNU projects to do it for decades.
02 / What it means for you
Your work stays open.
- You assign the copyright in your contribution to AxonOps. In return, AxonOps promises in the agreement to license it only as open source, and that promise is binding.
- You keep the right to use your own contributions however you like.
- When we offer your work to an Apache project, we name you as its author.
- You sign once, not for every project or pull request.
- If your employer owns your work, your employer also signs, or authorises you to sign for it.
